Spring Cleaning Jobs To Tackle

As the weather slowly starts to warm up, the next few weeks offer a great chance for an early spring yard cleanup. While getting the lawn and garden ready for the season seems like a big job, spreading it out over a few mild weekends early in the year can make it much more palatable. Plus, the vitamin D, fresh air, and exercise will do your body and mind a world of good after a long winter indoors. 

If you didn’t clean out your beds in the autumn, now is the time to do it. Cut back any dead debris and prune any shrubs or trees that are overgrown or have been damaged by winter. It’s a lot easier to do this before buds and leaves come which makes it more difficult to see what you’re cutting. With that being said, don’t start chopping away at spring bloomers until the buds have formed. If you’re worried about weeds, now is a good time to lay down your landscaper's fabric and mulch new beds. Just be careful to leave space for the plants that you want to come through. 

Don’t let those dead leaves and plant debris go to waste. You can fence off a small area for composting or purchase a tumbler. All that easy-to-break-down yard waste and future food scraps will make fantastic soil for later spring and summer planting. 

If you didn’t reseed your lawn in the fall, it’s not too late. Start by raking up any leaves and branches that have been left behind. Raking also acts as a massage for the ground as it allows oxygen to circulate. I always take it one step further and use an aerator to break up tough, cold soil which gives grass seeds the best chance for survival. Finally, reseed and fertilize to keep hungry birds away.  

If your yard is susceptible to crabgrass, using a pre-emergent will keep weeds at bay. Just make sure you take the proper precautions and don’t apply it near your new grass seedlings as it will kill them off instantly. 

Hardy veggies like broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower are best for early planting, as the same goes for peas as long as the ground is fully thawed. Spinach and lettuces are pretty tough too and can generally be put right into the ground in March if the weather cooperates. 

Finally, it’s too early now, but soon it will be time to start mowing. I always recommend setting the blade as high as it will go, especially if you’ve recently reseeded the yard. It’s smart to tread lightly in the first few weeks to make sure that the grass has time to properly root and get comfortable. Go too short too fast and you’ll have a complicated relationship with your yard for the rest of the season.

As Connecticut homeowners brace for the final stretch of winter, it’s a good time to focus on a few important tasks before spring arrives. With the unpredictability of late winter weather, these tasks will help ensure your home is prepared for both the lingering cold and the transition into warmer months. Here are some key tasks to consider in late winter:

1. Inspect Your Roof and Gutters

Winter storms, snow, and ice can cause damage to your roof. Before the snow melts completely, it’s important to inspect your roof for any missing or damaged shingles, especially if you experienced heavy snow or ice buildup. Be sure to check your attic for any signs of leaks. It's also a good time to clear out your gutters. Ice and snow can cause gutters to clog with debris, which can lead to water damage when the snow begins to melt.

2. Check Windows and Doors for Drafts

Late winter is a good time to check your home for drafts. Cold air can slip through gaps around windows and doors, which can increase heating costs and decrease comfort. Walk around your home and feel for drafts. If you find any, consider adding weatherstripping or caulking to seal the gaps. This small effort can make a big difference in maintaining an even temperature and reducing energy use.

3. Prepare Your Heating System for the Final Stretch

In late winter, your heating system has been working hard for several months. To ensure it continues to operate efficiently, change the filters in your furnace or heating system. Dust and debris can clog filters, forcing the system to work harder. Check your heating vents and baseboards for any blockages to make sure warm air flows freely throughout your home. If you haven’t had a professional checkup yet, consider scheduling one before the coldest months are behind you.

4. Check for Ice Dams

Ice dams are a common issue in Connecticut during late winter, and they can cause significant damage to your roof and attic. They occur when snow on the roof melts, but the water refreezes at the eaves, creating a barrier that traps water on the roof. This water can seep into your home and cause leaks. If you notice ice buildup along the eaves of your roof, take action by using a roof rake to clear snow or contact a professional to safely remove the ice dams.

While Connecticut winters are generally mild compared to other parts of the country, freezing pipes can still become a concern, especially during extreme cold snaps. Check any exposed pipes, particularly in areas like basements, attics, and garages. If you notice any cracks or weak spots, consider wrapping the pipes in insulation to protect them from freezing. If you’ve already had issues with frozen pipes, it may be a good idea to check for any damage to the plumbing that could cause leaks as the weather warms.

8. Clean Your Fireplace and Chimney

If you use a fireplace for heat or ambiance during the winter months, make sure to clean the chimney before the season is over. Creosote buildup in the chimney can be a fire hazard, so consider scheduling a professional cleaning if you haven’t done so recently. This is especially important before you begin to use the fireplace less frequently in the spring.

By focusing on these late winter tasks, homeowners can stay ahead of potential issues and ensure their home remains comfortable and efficient as the seasons transition. While spring may feel a little way off, a bit of late winter prep can make the changeover smoother when the time comes.

How to Keep Your Basement Dry This Winter

So, how can you protect your home and maintain a dry, comfortable lower level throughout the winter months? Here are six practical steps to safeguard your basement from winter water woes.

  1. Inspect and Seal the Exterior
    Your home’s first defense is its exterior. Start by walking around the foundation, looking for any cracks or openings. Even small gaps can let melting snow infiltrate your basement. Seal these problem areas with a high-quality waterproof sealant. Also, ensure that the ground around your home slopes away from the foundation to steer water clear of your basement.

  2. Stay on Top of Snow Removal
    Snow may look beautiful, but it can cause big headaches if it builds up near your home. After heavy snowfalls, clear snow away from your foundation, basement windows, and window wells. Keeping snow at a safe distance helps reduce the risk of melting snow pooling around your home and finding its way inside.

  3. Keep Gutters and Downspouts Flowing
    Clean gutters are essential year-round, but they are especially important in winter. Clogged gutters can cause water to overflow and pool near your foundation.
