Five Resolutions for Homeowners in the New Year

Chelsea O'Donnell

As we approach a new year, it's the perfect time for homeowners to reflect on their living spaces and set resolutions that will not only enhance aesthetics but also contribute to long-term comfort, savings, and sustainability. Here are five resolutions to consider for a more vibrant and efficient home in 2024.

1. Home Maintenance Schedule

One of the most practical resolutions for homeowners is to establish a comprehensive home maintenance schedule. This roadmap can be a game-changer when it comes to preserving the integrity of your home. Include routine tasks such as gutter cleaning, HVAC system checks, and roof inspections in your plan. By consistently adhering to this schedule, you can catch potential issues before they escalate into costly repairs.

2. Energy Efficiency Improvements

In the spirit of embracing a more sustainable lifestyle, resolve to make your home more energy-efficient in the coming year. Consider upgrading to energy-efficient appliances, sealing drafts in windows and doors, and adding insulation where needed. Additionally, installing a smart thermostat can optimize your heating and cooling systems, providing not only environmental benefits but also long-term cost savings on your energy bills.

3. Declutter and Organize

Amid the chaos of life, maintaining an organized and clutter-free home can be a challenge. This year, make it a resolution to declutter and organize your living spaces systematically. Take one room at a time, donating or discarding items you no longer need. Implement practical storage solutions to keep things organized. A clutter-free home not only looks more inviting, but it can also contribute to a more peaceful and stress-free living environment.

4. Home Security Enhancement

Safety should always be a top priority for homeowners. This year, resolve to assess and enhance the security of your home. Consider upgrading locks, installing a comprehensive security system, adding motion sensor lighting, and reinforcing doors and windows. A secure home not only protects your loved ones and belongings but also provides peace of mind. Investing in security measures is an investment in the well-being of your household.

5. Water Conservation Efforts

Water is a precious resource and every drop counts. Pledge to be a responsible homeowner by implementing water conservation efforts in and around your home. Promptly fix any leaks, install water-efficient fixtures, and consider drought-resistant landscaping. Conserving water not only aligns with environmental consciousness but can also result in lower water bills. In the pursuit of sustainability, small changes can lead to significant impacts.

As you embark on these resolutions for the New Year, remember to break them down into manageable tasks and create a timeline for implementation throughout the year. By doing so, you can track your progress and ensure that these resolutions become lasting improvements for your home. Here's to a year of positive changes, a refreshed home, and the satisfaction of being a proactive homeowner. Cheers to a Happy and Home-Enhanced New Year!

Tips for Finding the Right Professional

Chelsea O'Donnell

It can be tough to find a good home remodeling expert these days. With so many options and a lot of unknowns, getting a good contractor that you can trust can feel more daunting than the project you’re hiring them for. So where do you start? Here are my top tips for finding the best professional for your renovation plans.

Ask for referrals.

When it comes to hiring an expert for remodeling or home repair work, you should look at it the same way you would for a doctor or an accountant. Start by asking friends, family, or co-workers for a referral, or you can also try your local building inspector or the owner of the lumberyard in your area. Additionally, every tradesperson has a network of other home professionals they deal with regularly; so if you have a plumber but need an electrician, don’t be afraid to reach out. Local Facebook groups are also a fantastic way to search for recommendations.

Trust your gut.

When meeting with professionals, your gut feeling is as important as anything else. Home improvement is a personal process so go at it in the same way you would a first date. Do you like the solutions and options the expert provides? Does he communicate with you in a way that’s clear and concise?  Do you feel comfortable that she will do the job the way you want it done? Don’t get caught up in special deals or flashy talk, trust your instincts and go with a professional that feels more like a partner than a salesperson. A true expert will show his or her knowledge and educate you along the way.

Don’t ask for a rough estimate.

There is no use in asking for a “ballpark figure”, ever. Chances are that the prices quoted in the estimate will change once the contractor has a chance to understand what is specifically required. Certain things such as the condition of the property, the materials used for the job, and the personalization that you require will make up the price. Save yourself some time and confusion by making a list of what you really want before the contractors show up for the first appointment. Most professionals will give you an estimate for free so make the most of that opportunity by getting specific. Getting a good deal is important, but not if it means scrimping on quality workmanship.

Do ask for a plan.

Understanding your costs is key, but it’s also a good idea to ask for a plan of action to ensure you are fully aware of both the process and the timeline for the job. A simple step-by-step explanation will give you the clarity you need to ensure that you and your contractor are on the same page and it will also help you plan around activities you might have going on. As a professional, I like to make sure the steps involved in a job are clearly articulated for two reasons; it gives my customers confidence in the project and it helps them understand all of the work being undertaken, especially the parts that might not be as obvious.  In my opinion, an educated customer is the best kind of customer.

Rebate Programs for Connecticut Home Improvements

Chelsea O'Donnell

If you’ve ever thought about renovating your home but you’re conscious about the planet, it’s worth making sure you’re up to speed on some of the rebates and incentives offered by EnergizeCT. As conscientious consumers, making smart decisions about your home remodeling while doing good for the planet is always a great idea. Here are some of the programs available this summer:

  • Heat Pump: there are big savings for people looking to upgrade their heat and air conditioning. Work with a qualified contractor for your equipment and installation and you can get up to $15,000 in combined incentives.

  • Pool Pumps: a summer of swimming is always fun but maintenance? Not so much. If you’re in the market for a new pool pump, Eversource customers can get a rebate of up to $100. The offer says you can save up to $290 a year in energy costs since the new ones use up to 18 percent less energy than a standard pump.

  • Air Purifiers: these became a hot item after COVID and they continue to be popular amongst homeowners. You can snag $40 off a qualifying unit through the program and save money long-term too. ENERGY STAR® certified air purifiers are more than 25% more energy-efficient than standard models

  • Dehumidifiers: during the summer months, I dump my basement dehumidifier twice a day. Excess moisture is a real problem in many homes and it can lead to mold and mildew if not dealt with. The average dehumidifier costs about $300 but you can get up to $25 off per qualifying unit with this incentive program

  • Insulation: If you’re a regular reader, you’ll know how important having enough insulation is in the home. In addition to warmer winters and cooler summers, insulation is also a valuable improvement upon resale. You can get up to $1.70 per square foot for your insulation project which includes both batts and blown fiberglass.

  • Boilers and Furnaces: both of these essential appliances have a 20-year lifespan so if you’re coming to the end of yours, taking advantage of the rebate is a good idea. You can get up to $750 back if you choose an energy-efficient model and there is financing available too.

  • Thermostats: I love being able to set and adjust the temperature of my house from anywhere and it’s great for the planet too. Choose a Smart thermostat like Google Nest and get an $85 instant rebate. Plus they estimate energy savings of up to $180 on electric and $565 on gas.

As with any program or incentive, it’s always smart to read the fine print to ensure you qualify for the rebates. Head to energizect.com for the latest list of offerings and availability and happy home improvement shopping!
