Every autumn, all the major paint brands and color influencers choose a specific shade that sets the mood for the year to come. Influenced by what’s happening in the world around us as well as trends in fashion, design, and pop culture, the “Color of the Year” is chosen to give people inspiration for how to design and decorate their homes. While each major brand goes its own way, there are sometimes overlaps or themes that really set the tone for the upcoming season. Here is a sneak peek of what we will soon see in homes across social media, according to the big names in color. 

Limitless by Glidden for PPG

Anything but white, this creamy neutral shade is warm and inviting, the perfect pick-me-up that still pairs well with a wide-ranging palette. A beautiful canvas for warmer tones, it works well for walls, trims, and cabinets, setting the stage for more dramatic design elements. If you love neutral colors but are tired of dominant whites and grays, this is the hue for you. 

Renew Blue by Valspar

A sleepy shade of soft sky blue, this shade for 2024 offers off-season coastal vibes when the weather turns, the beach is quiet and everything feels calm and meditative. Think fog, mist, clouds, and everyday earthy elements that lean towards restoration and reflection.  This color looks beautiful when paired with other blue and gray tones and really pops with a contrast of gold. 

Cracked Pepper by Behr

A deep charcoal hue that adds style and elegance to any room and makes for a perfect alternative to black. The softness enables this color to fit in as comfortably in a modern farmhouse aesthetic as it would in a more industrial and modern apartment. If you’ve ever wanted to paint a whole room black but your nerves got the best of you, this is the color that fits the bill. 

Persimmon by HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams

The most vibrant of the picks so far, this color offers the warmth of a Tuscan country estate. A far cry from Barbie, this is pink all grown up with a sophistication that feels elegant and inviting. Warm orange tones bring a nice balance to this color, especially when paired with tans, mossy greens, and deep gray-blues. It’s unique and unexpected but won’t go out of style anytime soon. 

Ironside by Dutch Boy

Army green with an upscale edge, this 2024 pick feels ultra-earthy and sets the stage for settling in. We like the way Dutch Boy uses Ironside as an alternative trim color to typical white or black tones, pairing the deep green with peach and blue hues for a look that’s unique. We would pick this for a masculine retreat, office, or as a way to bring nature into the home.

Siding Trends for 2022

One of the best ways to instantly transform your home is with siding. As a durable, easy to clean, and highly customizable option, it’s no wonder why siding, and vinyl, in particular, is such a popular choice for savvy homeowners. Let’s have a look at what trends are popular now and what we’ll be sure to see in the years to come. 

Bold and Beautiful

While white will always be a classic color, darker shades of maroon, navy, green, gray, and brown are making a serious comeback. Popular in the 1980s, the dark look is being seen more and more in new construction and homeowners are making the choice to go bold with a deeper shade. Consider pairing a dark hue with a lighter trim for a nice contrast that will make the home stand out. 

Black and White

If a dark house isn’t your cup of tea, you might want to try the reverse. We’re seeing more and more light and white homes embrace dark color trims, especially black and charcoal. If you prefer to stick to a neutral siding tone, darker accents around doors, windows, soffits, and porch banisters can still add personality without being over the top. 

Texture

Another trend that’s gaining popularity is a textural finish on vinyl siding. Flat, smooth panels are making room for everything from wood shakes to stone and stucco finishes. Many people opt to use a designer finish in certain areas of the house to distinguish certain architectural features which add character and give a more polished, upscale look. 

Shading

While contrast certainly makes a statement, many people are opting to stick to one color family for a more subtle dimension. Plan to see siding, trim, and roofing in various shades of grays, browns, and greens, which give a home a warmer contrast that feels subdued yet polished. 

Vertical

Finally, now might be the time to consider vertical vinyl siding. This is a fantastic approach that gives a home height and it can be used in conjunction with horizontal siding for a unique look. Vertical siding is also easy to clean and slightly less resistant to mold growing in the seams. It’s slightly more expensive to install, so keep that in mind if you’re considering this look.

Speaking of cost, one last thing to consider is the cost of materials these days. Remodeling projects are in high demand and so too are supplies. Between manufacturing, transportation, and logistics, your project might take a little longer and cost a little more than you would expect. Ask your contractor about any potential delays or price increases while you’re getting your quotes to be sure your project runs as smoothly as it should.

A Quick Guide to Christmas Tree Varieties

With so many beautiful Christmas trees to choose from, it can be hard to pick a style and species to suit a family’s home and unique needs. You might not know that some trees are better for kids while others are great for people with allergies. Yet other varieties are good for certain types of heat and can withstand warmer, dryer temperatures for longer. So without further ado, here is my list of the top trees that you’ll find at your local farm or stand, and some of the key differences to help you find your perfect match. 

Balsam Fir

One of the most popular picks for Christmas is a balsam fir, which is loved for its sturdy needles, bright green color, strong scent, and beautiful shape. Because of its popularity, the balsam fir is also one of the more affordable options of all the different tree types. You can’t go wrong with this classic, which grows strong and lasts long. Plus, like most firs, it’s hypoallergenic too. 

White Pine

This is another winner but for a much different reason than the balsam. White pines are loved by families for their super soft texture and touchable needles. They can grow very large and they are also inexpensive, which makes them the choice tree for many people with young children. One thing to note about this species is that those soft needles grow from delicate branches, so only go this route if you have lightweight ornaments. 

Douglas Fir

Though called a fir, the Douglas is actually a species all its own. While grown mainly in the Northwest region of the United States, this tree is popular all over the country because it’s tough enough to withstand early cutting and lots of traveling. The needles are soft with a sweet fragrance and the shape is conical, making it easy and fun to decorate without too much precision.

Blue Spruce

The color of this tree makes it the hero of any holiday decor. Those beautiful bluish needles are easy to fall in love with, but decorator beware - those babies are sharp! If you have a good set of gloves, they will be well worth using to get this tree in place. But once it’s decorated, you can rest easy as pets tend to keep their distance.

Concolor Fir

The concolor is a favorite in my house because it has all the wonderful characteristics of the fir species - great shape, good color, strong branches, and long needles. The difference is the smell. Unlike most Christmas trees, this variety offers a beautiful citrus scent, keeping the house bright and fresh smelling through the holidays.
